The short version
- Use ScanQR lawfully and don’t abuse the service.
- A QR code can lead anywhere. ScanQR shows you what’s inside, but it can’t tell you whether it’s safe, so check before you open links or share information.
- Generated QR codes are stored for about an hour, then deleted automatically.
- The service is free, provided as is, and may change or go offline.
1. Agreement and the Service
These Terms of Service apply to scanqr.org and the tools on it, including the QR code scanner and the QR code generator (together, the “Service”). ScanQR (“we”, “us”) operates the Service. By using it, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Service.
ScanQR is a free web tool that decodes QR codes from uploaded images, pasted screenshots, and your camera. Scanning happens in your browser, and you don’t need an account. Optional features, such as scan history and offline use, store data on your device as described in the Privacy Policy. The QR code generator creates QR codes from content you enter and stores them temporarily, as described below.
2. Check what you scan
A QR code can contain a link, a Wi-Fi password, a contact card, a payment request, or plain text. ScanQR shows you what the code contains. It doesn’t verify who made the code, check links for phishing or malware, or confirm that the content is accurate or safe.
Before you open a link, join a network, save a contact, or pay anyone, make sure you trust the source. You’re responsible for what you do with scan results and for any consequences of acting on content from a QR code.
3. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- break the law or infringe anyone’s rights while using the Service, including by creating QR codes that point to unlawful, deceptive, or harmful content;
- use the Service to phish, spam, harass, or defraud people, or to collect other people’s personal information without permission;
- upload or send malware, or any code meant to damage or interfere with the Service or other people’s devices;
- probe, bypass, or interfere with the Service’s security or performance, including through scraping or automated bulk requests;
- copy, mirror, resell, or repackage the Service or its content as your own without our written permission.
We may delete or block any generated QR code that we believe breaks these terms. If a third party makes a claim against us because of your misuse of the Service, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it.
4. Your content and ours
The images, QR codes, and results you work with belong to you. Because scanning happens on your device, we don’t receive or store what you scan. If you use the QR code generator, you give us permission to store the QR code you create for about one hour so the generator can work, after which it is deleted automatically, as described in the Privacy Policy. We claim no other rights in your content. If you send us feedback or suggestions, you agree we may use them to improve the Service without owing you anything.
The ScanQR name, logo, design, and written content belong to us or our licensors. The scanner is built on open-source software, including a JavaScript port of Google’s ZXing library by Cosmo Wolfe, which stays under its own license.
5. Ads and third-party services
ScanQR is free to use and is supported by advertising. We use Google AdSense for ads and Google Analytics for usage statistics, as described in the Privacy Policy.
Ads, links, and websites from third parties aren’t ours. We don’t endorse them or accept responsibility for their content, products, or practices, and your dealings with them are between you and them.
6. Availability and accuracy
We may add, change, suspend, or end any part of the Service at any time, with or without notice. Generated QR codes are deleted automatically after about an hour and we may not be able to restore them, so download yours when it’s ready. Offline use depends on your browser and device and may not work everywhere. We don’t promise that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free.
Scan results depend on image quality, lighting, damage to the code, and your device. The scanner may fail to read a code or may read it incorrectly. Check results before relying on them for anything important, such as payments, tickets, or medical or safety information.
7. Disclaimers and limits of liability
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. Some places don’t allow certain disclaimers, so part of this may not apply to you.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, ScanQR and its owners, employees, contractors, and service providers aren’t liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, or data, arising from your use of or inability to use the Service. This includes harm that results from content you open or act on after scanning a QR code. If your jurisdiction doesn’t allow these exclusions, our liability is limited to the fullest extent the law permits.
8. Ending your use
You can stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or block your access if you break these terms or misuse the Service. Sections that by their nature should continue, such as disclaimers and limits of liability, survive.
9. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms by posting a new version on this page with a new date. If you keep using the Service after a change, you accept the updated terms. Please check back from time to time.
